Chase Away the End of Summer Blues with a Weekend Trip to Memphis

Summer may be winding down, but don’t start singing the blues just yet. Whisk those doldrums away with a last-minute weekend getaway to Memphis. This power-packed Friday field trip will make you laugh, make you cry, make you dance, and your memories of the Bluff City will sustain you for the rest of the year.

Hop in the car and set your GPS to Memphis, Tennessee.

We’re only a short drive from tons of cities: Nashville, Little Rock, Birmingham, Jackson, St. Louis and many more.

Once you cruise past the city limits, grab some dinner in Downtown Memphis. For a casual, family-fun seafood joint at a great price, check out the Flying Fish. Or if you want a more upscale experience, dine at the Majestic Grille. This former movie theater plays black-and-white flicks, which creates great ambience and gets you ready for the rest of your weekend.

After dinner, stroll along the world famous Beale Street and enjoy some live tunes. We have some of the best musicians around; just let your ears be your guide.

In the morning, head down to Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid. Hear us out. This is more than just a store. With something to offer everyone, the new Bass Pro Shops has an incredible assortment of fishing, boating, hunting and outdoor gear. In addition, the mega store includes a 103-room hotel with tree-house cabins, 600,000 gallons of water teeming with over 1,800 fish, a cypress swamp with alligator pools, a breathtaking observation deck at the top of the 32-story steel pyramid, two restaurants and a bowling alley!
For lunch, make room for some delicious Memphis barbecue. Central BBQ Downtown offers a relaxed atmosphere and some of the best ribs in town. Insider tip: Order the barbecue nachos (pork, chicken or turkey – your choice) and get them served on Central’s housemade potato chips.

If the weather cooperates, take a ride on a Memphis Riverboat. Energetic narrators give passengers an in-depth history of the Mississippi on this 2-hour afternoon cruise. Don’t worry if your tummy starts grumbling, they serve concessions on board.

Once you're back on dry land, stop by the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum. No other place in the city has such a comprehensive account of the history of the music in the Mid-South. You’ll find everything from Elvis and Johnny Cash to Otis Redding and Al Green. See how music played an integral part in the growth of Memphis.

If you want to eat dinner at a local hot spot, you can’t go wrong with Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, where the special of the day is, you guessed it, chicken. For the best value, order a family pack and your table will be piled high with extremely juicy, slightly spicy, crispy crunchy chicken. Don’t miss out on the chess pie for dessert.

Complete your night with a ghost tour from Backbeat Tours or Historical Haunts. Local guides will take you to all of the haunted spots around town for a spooky good time.

We’re serious about brunch in the Bluff City. Brother Juniper’s in East Memphis has received a lot of acclaim and is a favorite of several Food Network television personalities. The Beauty Shop in Midtown has some of the best lemon ricotta pancakes around and Eighty3 at the Madison Hotel in Downtown Memphis is known for its maple-glazed bacon and Southern-style biscuits.

Before you scoot out of town, take the kids to the Memphis Zoo. Rated as one of the top zoos by TripAdvisor, the Memphis Zoo puts you nose-to-nose with a grizzly bear, hippos and other exotic wild animals. Kids love splashing in the geyser on a hot summer day.

Whatever your preference or budget, Memphis is the perfect option for a weekend getaway.
